Background on us

The Project team is made up of seven individuals who work together to interview narrators, manage the Project’s digital presence, and build communal resources based. Learn more about the team and their backgrounds below (some not shown).

Team Members

prabhdeep singh kehal, PhD (they)

Project Founder & Manager

prabhdeep is a writer, sociologist, and educator. Their work asks what constitutes anti-racist, anti-colonial, and anti-casteist practices of inclusion. With the Project, they manage activities and conduct oral history interviews with LGBTQIA+ Sikhs to explore how Sikhs feel included in sangat and nation as they navigate experiences of cisheterosexism and settler colonialism through Sikhi. They completed a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, served as co-lead editor of the Sikh Research Journal, and received their PhD in sociology from Brown University.

Karmine Kaur (she, they)

Research Associate

Karmine Kaur is a Research Associate for the Sikh LGBTQIA+ Oral History Project. She received a Global Studies – Public Health B.A. and a Master of Public Policy from the University of Virginia, focusing on the social determinants of health including misogyny, racism, and access to resources. For the Project, Karmine interviews narrators, analyzes transcripts, and contributes to resource creation. She dreams about liberation for oppressed classes and believes change can start from highlighting marginalized voices and fostering community. In her free time, you can often find Karmine thinking about culture, re-watching Gilmore Girls, and planning her next meal.

Sukhmony Brar (she)

Research Associate

Sukhmony Brar is an artist and aspiring community planner based in Ann Arbor, MI. She’s passionate about biodiversity across the landscape, community histories, and collective healing through the mediums of art and agriculture. With the LGBTQIA+ Sikh Oral History Project, Sukhmony hopes to foster a safe, inspiring space for queer and trans Sikhs to fully express themselves and find community through shared struggles of visibility.

Alumni

We have been incredibly lucky to work with amazing people through the Project. Some of these members are not part of the primary team anymore, but we could not have made it where we are without them! 

manmit singh (they): manmit singh is a PhD student in the Gender, Race, Sexuality, and Social Justice Program at the University of British Columbia. They worked as a Research Associate with the Project from 2022-2024.

Sana Siddiqui (they): Sana Siddiqui is a poet, librarian, and memory worker. They are passionate about inviting and creating story in place and in transition/movement. For the Project, Sana supports the coding and cleaning of transcripts from narrators as well as the creation of guidelines on the processes of our work to share with community. Sana feels called to offer their support to communities that they have ties to by shared history as well as land-based relationships in hopes of co-creating past, present, and future worlds. They worked as a Research Associate with the Project in 2024.
